WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Fifteen years ago, I left a career as a kindergarten teacher to stay home when my first daughter was born. I always loved the creative side of teaching, and soon started designing items for my own children that facilitated pretend play and imagination. What started as a way to bring creativity and resourcefulness to playtime soon turned into an entrepreneurial journey.
Superkid Capes came to life in 2010 as I began making superhero capes as gifts for my children as well as friends and family. Despite no formal training as a seamstress, I started making capes at my kitchen table and selling them online via an Etsy shop. Thousands of capes (and three more daughters) later, I’ve expanded to a workshop, hiring a small staff of moms to help with sewing and assembling capes.
Still feeling a kindred connection with educators, I opened a custom t-shirt line in 2018. These stylish shirts recognize the important role teachers play in our world and feature inspirational messages for educators and those who love them.
Together, these two categories form SKC: Superkid Capes, and the clothing line sold under the name SKC Apparel.
Today, Superkid Capes has risen to the top 1% of Etsy shops based on sales, and SKC Apparel shirts have been a hit at education conferences throughout the Midwest (often selling out of one or more designs).
I never dreamed I'd go from lesson plans to cape patterns and t-shirt designs. As a teacher, I loved taking children on adventures through learning. In some ways not much has changed. I feel passionate about developing creativity and imagination in children and providing them all kinds of "tools" that make such development possible, as well as supporting the people who have dedicated their lives to doing the same.
